About Promeuro
Since its creation in 1990, the non-profit seeking PROMECU, association of citizens for the promotion of the European currency, has sought to involve citizens in the preparation of the Economic and Monetary Union.. To be and remain successful, this ambitious programme needs citizens’ understanding and participation.
Its statutes state:
”The Association PROMECU was born out of the Committee for the promotion of the ecu created in 1987 by the Group of the European Institutions of the Union of European Federalists (UEF). Its objective is to prepare the European consumers for their common currency by stimulating its use there where it offers comparative advantages. The Association settles all its payments in ecus” (Art. 1).
Following the change of name of the European currency at the European Summit of Madrid in December 1995, the name was changed to PROMEURO and objectives and statutes adapted accordingly with the help of European Communication Strategies (ECS). PROMEURO remained a non-profit seeking association based in Luxembourg but with a European constitution.
In 1997, PROMEURO developed a multimedia teaching programme about the history of the euro comprising a teacher’s manual (translated into 6 and published in 5 languages – French, English, German, Dutch and Greek), transparencies and a video (developed in 3 languages – French, English and German). At the request of the Commission, the programme was designed for teachers of youngsters aged 15 to 25
In 1999, PROMEURO developed at the request of the Teachers’ training organisation withing the French Ministry of Education an integrated multimedia e.learning programme called “The euro in twelve Themes”. The programme was computerissed by the French company “INTELVIDERE” with the financial support of the European Investment Bank (

In July 2002, the euro having been successfully introduced, PROMEURO’s General Assembly decided to wind up the association. Its website –
http://www.promeuro.org - where the integrated education programme was available in French only continued, however, to receive more than 6 000 visitors per month from all over the world (more than 11 000 during the months preceding the referenda on the European Constitutional Treaty in 2005). Hence, it was decided to try to find a location where the programme could be lodged. In March 2005, PROMEURO signed an agreement with the European Teachers’ Association (ETA) to take over the programme after it having been updated and complemented with several subjects requested by ETA’s International Bureau.
The programme available under “TRAINEUROPE” was completed with the financial support of PROMEURO, ETA and the European Commission in July 2007.
