Working in a UK Further Education College

If you decide to work at a UK college within the Further Education Sector you will probably be employed on what is termed a "New Contract" which makes new lecturers work for longer hours, reduced pay and with fewer incentives. Lecturers who are in employment and who have refused to sign the so called New Contracts have usually been refused an annual pay increase for what could be up to five years or more. Considerable personal and family hardship results.

At one UK College most staff over 45 years in one particular department were declared redundant and new young lecturers employed in their place on the New Contract and at lower rates of pay. The Head of Department regarded this as a "challenge to mould the new young lecturers into a working team."

At another UK College it was reported (TES 1997) that its Chief Executive funded an agency which supplied lecturers on low paid contract work to replace those higher paid lecturing staff who had been declared redundant.

Further Education Funding Council
[this body no longer exists]
The Further Education Funding Council (FEFC) has a legal duty to make sure further education in England is properly assessed. The FEFC’s inspectorate inspects and reports on each college of further education according to a four-year cycle. It also inspects other further education provision funded by the FEFC. In fulfilling its work programme, the inspectorate assesses and reports nationally on the curriculum, disseminates good practice and advises the FEFC’s quality assessment committee.

Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted)

Supply Teachers in the EU
Initiating the debate

Supply workers provided by agencies are a feature of modern Western economies. The focus here is on teaching, which in some regions could not function without the contribution of supply teachers.
A serious debate is required because many supply teachers actually work in 19th century conditions. This memorandum simply delineates some of the main features of the complex problem
