Working in a UK Further Education College If you decide to work at a UK college within the Further Education Sector you will probably be employed on what is termed a "New Contract" which makes new lecturers work for longer hours, reduced pay and with fewer incentives. Lecturers who are in employment and who have refused to sign the so called New Contracts have usually been refused an annual pay increase for what could be up to five years or more. Considerable personal and family hardship results. At one UK College most staff over 45 years in one particular department were declared redundant and new young lecturers employed in their place on the New Contract and at lower rates of pay. The Head of Department regarded this as a "challenge to mould the new young lecturers into a working team." At another UK College it was reported (TES 1997) that its Chief Executive funded an agency which supplied lecturers on low paid contract work to replace those higher paid lecturing staff who had been declared redundant.
