The 2009/2010 season of the Scala Theatre in Milan was launched withGeorges Bizet's "Carmen". Also on the programme this season are "Rigoletto" by Verdi, "Don Giovanni" by Mozart, "Tannhäuser" by Wagner, "The Barber of Seville" and "Opportunity makes a thief" by Rossini and "The Elixir of Love" by Donizetti.

EU/Cinema
The prize for the best film in European cinema was awarded to "Das Weisse Band" (The White Ribbon) by Austrian prodcuer Michael Haneke, who was also a prize winner in May at the Cannes Festival. The public's prize was awarded to "Slumdog Millionaire" by British producer Danny Boyle. Briton Kate Winslet won the prize for best actress for her role in "The Reader" whilst Frenchman Tahar Rahim won the prize for best actor for his role in "A Prophet". The European Cinema Prizes are awareded each year by the European Cinema Academy whose members are professionals from all over Europe.
